Comparison and contrast Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Comparison and contrast - Essay Example By analyzing these fragments and piecing them together, a modern civilization can extrapolate and theorize about long-term social changes that occurred throughout the rise and fall of empires. In Ancient Greece and Persia, in particular, one can trace the influence of individuality on those two empiresââ¬â¢ vision of manââ¬â¢s place on earth. Individuality is a concept rooted in the fabric of Greek society, while it is the value of obedience to god-like authority that one sees most clearly in Persian society. These differing social, moral, and philosophic factors are all perceptible in study of the artworks that have survived from these ancient peoples. Art is particularly useful for understanding the lives and beliefs of ancient peoples because, according to one scholar, art tells a person more about the reality of something than do the bare facts uncovered by empirical investigation (McBrien 132). Because social values strongly influence the individual perception of the world , artworks created by individuals in that context share a great knowledge about the cultural understandings of that social context. Therefore, one of the most important ways of analyzing an ancient culture is to look at its art. One key aspect of any given culture is its view of the individual versus society. Some societies clearly favor an individualââ¬â¢s place in the world, while others clearly support the society over individuals. The bust of Pericles sits in the British Museum and is a slightly idealized version of the Athenian political leader. Although the bust as we see it today is a copy of an earlier work completed by Cresilas, it is faithful to the original and demonstrates the qualities given to the representation of Pericles by the sculptor. Pericles was a famous leader of Athens during the time of the Peloponnesian War and the construction of the Parthenon. Despite the tendency of leaders to be immortalized through history, the history of Pericles is relatively accu rate due to the quality of Athenian historians. In many ways, Pericles represents the golden age of Athens, and his bust reflects that history, without going over to extravagance. In the bust, Pericles peers off into the distance, wearing atop his head a mask of war, and keeping a thick beard. The size of the bust is realistic with respect to its dimensions and how it models an actual human beingââ¬â¢s size. These features make the bust look very realistic and human: treating Pericles very much as a man of achievement and virtue, rather than as a god. In contrast, the Persian statue of Darius I, who was treated as a god in his empire, is a depiction of a god and not a mere mortal. It is Egyptian in character, which was a civilization known for treating its rulers as divine beings. A hieroglyphic inscription on the statue states, ââ¬Å"Dariusââ¬âmay he live forever! The statue, formed as a true image of the perfect god, the Lord of the Two Landsâ⬠(Mysliwiec and Lorton 1 51). The statue lives up to this commencement: showing the figure as a towering being without attachment to the physical world. While the statue commands an instant attraction to what exactly it means, the purpose of the statue seems immediately clear: to give a sense of reverence and admiration to the leader of the Persian people. Darius clearly used the rhetoric of a godlike figure in order to

Defoe, Richardson, Fielding and the English Novel :: Literature Essays Literary Criticism
Defoe, Richardson, Fielding and the English Novel à à à à à The roots of the novel extend as far back as the beginning of communication and language because the novel is a compilation of various elements that have evolved over the centuries.à The birth of the English novel, however, can be centered on the work of three writers of the 18th century: Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) and Henry Fielding (1707-1754).à Various critics have deemed both Defoe and Richardson the father of the English novel, and Fielding is never discussed without comparison to Richardson.à The choice of these three authors is not arbitrary; it is based on central elements of the novel that these authors contributed which brought the novel itself into place.à Of course, Defoe, Richardson and Fielding added onto styles of the past and writing styles of the period, including moralistic instruction and picaresque stories.à Using writing of the time and the literary tradition of the past, Defoe first crafted the English novel while Richardson and Fielding completed its inception. à à à à Critics disagree on a strict definition of the novel; D.H. Lawrence has remarked, "You can put anything you like in a novel" (Stevenson 2), and Wagenknecht in his Cavalcade of the English Novel has claimed the "...'novel' has never been satisfactorily defined" (xvii).à Henry James had a unique perception of the novel: à "A novel is a living thing, all one and continuous, like any other organism, and in proportion as it lives will it be found, I think, that in each of the parts there is something of the other parts."à à à à à (Kettle 12) à "Novel" comes from the Italian "novelle," which was used for sensational news stories.à One collection, Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, was popularized in the 14th century (Phelps 11).à The term carried over into English to form the basis of the English novels. à à à à There are certain components that a novel should contain.à George Phelps has come up with a six-part basis for identifying novels: the writing must be fictitious, or in other words "not pretend to tell the truth," have a certain length, attain a unity of "plot, theme, tone, atmosphere, or vision," create an illusion of reality, be concerned with character, and be prose (Phelps 7-8).à Kettle, in his An Introduction to the English Novel, argues a novel must have two elements -- a quality of life and a significant pattern (13).
Abortion Essay -- essays research papers
Abortion is never an easy decision, in fact its one of Americaââ¬â¢s most controversial issues in todayââ¬â¢s reality, but women have none the less been making that choice for thousands of years. Studies show that about 43% of American women will have one or more abortions during their lifetime, and women's centers and hospitals perform more than a million abortions on an annual basis. Women have many reasons for not wanting to be pregnant including age, marital status, economic status, and the circumstances of their pregnancy, and thus seek out an abortion. Although many citizens view abortion as an immoral act of brutality and strongly contest its usage, others believe the choice belongs solely to the mother and the mother alone. The main argument pertaining to abortion is whether or not a fetus is a "person" that is "indistinguishable from the rest of us" and if it deserves rights equal to women's. On this question there is a tremendous spectrum of religious, philosophical, scientific, and medical opinion, but it all really depends on who you ask. It's been argued for centuries. Fortunately, our society has recognized that each woman must be able to make this decision, based on her own conscience. To impose a law defining a fetus as a "person," granting it rights equal to or superior to a woman's, thinking, feeling, conscious human being, is not only arrogant but absurd. It only serves to diminish a womanââ¬â¢s value. (Heritage House 76, Inc.)Under the view of pro choice supporters the embryo is not a baby since it can not survive and live outside the uterus since it receives everything needed to survive from the motherââ¬â¢s body. In a sense the fetus dies but it was neve r living to begin with so it can not be considered an act of murder as pro-lifers would argue. More simply consider acorns and trees. (Robinson) Just as an acorn is a fertilized egg of the oak, that does not make it a tree. Sure it has the potential to become an oak tree, but it has not yet grown to that stage and thus can not be considered one. (Blackmun 78) Putting out laws to prohibit abortions does not necessarily stop it; it merely attempts to make it more difficult. When women feel it is absolutely necessary, they will choose to have abortions, even in secret, without medical care, in dangerous circumstances. This only puts the life of the mother at an even greater r... ...the option of deciding when or whether to have children? Or is that a government decision? And who is going to feed and cloth and above all provide a nurturing environment for the growth and development of societyââ¬â¢s most precious life, certainly not the government. (Planned Parenthood) Thus since the child relies upon the mother for its life, the mother should be entirely in charge of the decisions concerning her life, body, and well being. Activists on both sides speak out everyday in violent and non violent ways to express their opinions concerning the topic. Abortion, now in the twenty first century has become not only a political debate but a biological and even religious debate. By the basis of the Supreme Court case of Roe vs. Wade, in no way should the government deprive a woman of her right to personal liberty (under the Fourteenth Amendment) and her reservation of rights to the people (under the Ninth Amendment) upheld by the constitution of the United States of America. (Herda 54-57) The U.S. is a country or personal freedoms and liberties, and never should it act as a dictator whose powers limit the ability to protect oneââ¬â¢s self, especially womenââ¬â¢s reproductive rights.

Making a Connection in Thos Pynchons The Crying of Lot 49 Essay
Making a Connection in The Crying of Lot 49 Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã For as long as I could read comprehensively, I have always believed that great writing centered around well written stories that would both provide a certain measure of unaffected pleasure, as well as challenge the readers perception of the world at large; both within and outside of the sphere of its prose. Thomas Pynchons' The Crying of Lot 49 encompasses both of those requirements; by enfolding his readers, through a variety of means, within the intricate workings of his narrative. It centers around would be heroine Oedipa Maas, a practical but somewhat restless woman, who's life is turned upside down when she discovers that she has been made executor of the estate of old flame and entrepreneur Pierce Inverarity. When she is imposed upon to travel to the fictional city of San Narcisco, where Inverarity is said to have numerous real estate holdings, in order to carry out her task, Oedipa stumbles upon a muted post horn; the first of many clues leading h er deep into the impenetrable conspiracy surrounding Trystero, an underground postal system shrouded in mystery and intrigue; opening her eyes to an alternative way of life. This post modern work of literature infuses dark humor and irony instigating a metamorphosis of intellectually challenging material; subsequently luring us, his readers who have unknowingly become a part of the conspiracy, into the methodical chaos of The Crying of Lot 49. Ã Ã Ã Well known for incorporating the basic ideas of philosophy and physics into all of his writings, Pynchon states that the "measure of the world is its entropy" (The Grim Phoenix, pg.2); an assertion that extends into the worlds he has created within th... ...te of the fact that this book accomplished its task, which I am supposing was to challenge my perceptions and reawaken some innate sense of self realization within me; to borrow the words of another, after enduring the torture of Pynchon's text for seven straight days my final assessment leads me to conclude that the covers of this book are too far apart.
